Interesting Facts About Great Depression

The Great Depression was an economic depression which took place worldwide during the decade before World War II started. This economic depression started at the end of the 1920’s and lasted for over a decade.
The Great Depression started in the United States where stock prices fell in September 1929. On October 29, 1929, the stock market crash took place and that day got the name of Black Tuesday. The depression spread all over the world after that.
Below are a some interesting facts about the Great Depression.
The United States president in rule when the depression started was Herbert Hoover, a Republican. In 1930 he declared that the economy would soon fix itself, because the worst had passed. That was only the beginning though, and the depression would last for another nine years.
A lot of people lost their houses during the Great Depression. These people ended up in shanty towns, which were also called Hoovervilles after the name of the president. Other terms named after the president at that time were Hoover wagons (cars which used mules to pull them because they were broken), Hoover hogs (food which consisted of jack rabbits), Hoover blankets (people used newspapers as blankets) and Hoover stew (the food which was available at soup kitchens).
One of the most well known people of that period, Al Capone, tried to improve his public figure by opening a soup kitchen. A lot of people survived only because of the food offered by soup kitchens all over the country.
Some of the causes are thought to be the stock market crash of 1929, banking system which was weak, the overproduction, the credit bubble, the policies of the government and the fact that the boost of the 1920’s didn’t help industrial workers and farmers.
A lot of people committed suicide after the crash in the financial district of New York. It apparently became so bad that one hotel’s clerks were asking the guests if they wanted to rent a room for jumping or for sleeping.
• The height of the great depression is thought to have peaked between 1932-1933.
• At the height of the great depression the unemployment rate was documented at more than 20% and family income averaged half what they were making in 1929.

Gold at the time was worth about $20 per ounce and the U.S government told everyone they would buy their gold from them for $20.67. If you were tried and convicted of owning more than the the allowed maximum you could be fined $10,000.00 and or up to ten years in prison. Some citizens were exempt from executive order 6102 if their profession required the use of more than the maximum amount of gold allowed.

Interesting Facts About Mars

Below are some interesting facts about the planet Mars that maybe you’ve forgotten or simply never knew.
While the focus is on mars, we’ve also added some facts about earth, the sun and other areas of our solar system we believe you’ll find interesting to read and can help extend your knowledge base.
The closest planet to the sun is Mercuryfollowed by Venus, Earth, the earths moon then Mars. The earth’s moon is not a planet, so the fourth planet from our sun is Mars. Continuing past Mars is something called Ceres, we say something because we’re not sure what to call it since astronomers actually have an ongoing debate on the classification of Ceres and it’s classification has been changed on more than one occasion. Some will tell you Ceres is a dwarf planet while others say it’s nothing more than the largest asteroid in the inner solar system.
Where does Mars get it’s name from?
The planet Mars gets it’s name from Mars, the Roman war god, but it’s also often called the Red Planet, because it has a red appearance which is caused by the iron oxide which is found on the planet’s surface.
Since ancient times and with various cultures, some of the names the planet Mars has been associated with are war, fire, anger, storms, violence, bloodshed, blood, celibacy, rebel and even fertility.
How big is Mars?
The total surface area of Mars is almost 144.8 million square km, which is just a bit over 28% of that of Earth.
What is it like on Mars?
While Mars is rough, rocky, mountainous, cold and has wild weather which makes it pretty down right uninviting to humans, Mars is also a planet which is similar to Earth in many regards, though it has a thin atmosphere and quite a few impact craters. You can find deserts, polar ice caps, valleys and volcanoes there which when combined don’t offer the friendliest environment.
There are two moons also known as satellites on the orbit of Mars named Deimos and Phobos. Phobos rises in the west and sets in the east every 11 hours while Deimos is much slower.
More interesting facts about Mars:
  • In August 2012, a planetary geologist and professor at the University of California (An Yin) made the discovery that Mars does have tectonic plates. It was previously believed that earth was the only planet with plate tectonics and that Mars was too small and too cold below surface to have tectonic plates. Professor Yen has referred to the 2 tectonic plates he discovered as Valles Marineris North and Valles Marineris South.
  • Now that we know Mars has plate tectonics, in can be concluded that it also has marsquakes similar to earthquakes on earth which could explain why large boulders have recently moved on mars seen by satellite imagery.
  • After traveling approximately 352 million miles and more than 8 months at approximately 12,000 miles per hour, Nasa’s $2.5 billion Curiosity Rover landed on Mars on August 5th, 2012 and is expected to be in operation for about 2 earth years at 23 months or one Mars year.
  • Mars hosts the largest volcano in our solar system called Olympus Mons which is approximately 22 kilometers “14 miles” high also making it taller than any mountain in the solar system. Almost 3 times the height of Mount Everest.
  • Mars hosts the deepest known canyon in our solar system which is named Melas Chasma.
  • The approximate diameter of mars is 4,220 miles. For comparison reasons, the approximate diameter of the earth is 7,926 miles.
  • A year on Mars is 687 days long. A year on earth is 365.25 days long.
  • A day on Mars is 24 hours 37 minutes long.
  • The average temperature on Mars is minus 81 degrees fahrenheit. The average temperature of the earth is 57 degrees fahrenheit.
  • The distance varies by the second due to constant movement but the approximate average distance Mars is from the sun is 142 million miles away while the approximate average distance of the earth from the sun is 93 million miles.
  • A ship that tries to escape this planet’s gravity needs to have a 5 km/s escape velocity.
  • In 1976 the United States landed two probes on Mars named Viking 1 and Viking 2 which sent back the very first color photos from Mars to earth.
  • The famous face on Mars picture was taken on 7-25-1976 by the United States probe Viking 1.
  • While it’s the fourth planet from the Sun, Mars is the seventh planet as far as size is concerned in our Solar System
  • 1965 was the year when the first Mars mission which was successful took place. Mariner 4 was the probe which reached the Red Planet and it sent to Earth a total of 22 photos.
  • The first country which managed to land successfully was the USSR which is now The Russian Federation, the probes were named Mars 2 and 3 landed in 1971 and and worked through a portion of 1972. Mars 2 and 3 sent back what was considered a large amount of data at that time which consisted of around 60 pictures or images.
  • There are currently a total of three spacecraft which orbit the planet and on the surface there are two probes.

Interesting Facts About Recycling

Interesting facts about recycling teaches how the process of recycling works when reusing glass, plastic and other waste materials. Learn what plastic drinking bottles you should never refill and reuse to drink from and why you may want to stay away from styrofoam.
Testamonial. Hello sir, your website is amazing. I learned a lot. I really like the info on recycling, i’m never gonna reuse the #1 plastic again in my life. Thankyou for the wonderful information.
In general, when a material or product is recycled fewer fresh materials are needed than when a product is manufactured for the first time, less energy is used and pollution to our air and water is reduced. Recycling is important to a cleaner environment.
You’ve seen the triangle with arrows ( the recycle symbol ) on plastic containers a thousand times but did you ever notice a number inside the symbol? Look at the water bottle sitting next to you or in your fridge, look for the recycle symbol and notice what number is inside it (The symbol is usually near the bottom of the bottle and sometimes on the very bottom). The number inside the triangle is probably a 1 or a 2 and is an important number to know. Below we explain what the most common numbers mean and the dangers involved, it’s simple but something we (including our children) should all know.
Important! Be sure to read below, why to never reuse a #1 plastic water bottle to drink out of. The #1 water bottle is your typical store bought drinking water bottle.
Instead of tossing something recyclable into the trash, you should do your part to make sure it gets recycled. Often times there’s designated areas to drop off recyclables. If you have a garbage collector at your home or office, ask them if they have a special container for you to put your recyclables in.
Below are some interesting facts about recycling:
  • Using the average 12 ounce soda or beer can it would take about 33 empty aluminum cans to equal one pound.
  • The average disposable diaper sold today could easily last well over one hundred years in a local landfill and the average baby will need at least 7500 diapers from birth until potty/toilet trained.
  • Glass is 100% recyclable, it doesn’t lose quality, durability or purity during the recycling process.
  • The international agency for research on cancer has said that styrene ( what styrofoam comes from – polystyrene  or polystyrene foam from the styrene monomer) is a probable carcinogen and the EPA says it’s a suspected toxin to some of the bodies organs. The National Toxicology Program has deemed it an anticipated human carcinogen. When you use a Styrofoam cup, remember they have a long lifespan in a landfill and are very unlikely to ever be recycled. Styrofoam is also known to be a choking hazard for a lot of animals.
  • Have you heard of fog harvesting? There’s a net (sometimes referred to as a fog harvesting fence or fog harvesting tower) that with the help of wind can take fog and turn it into clean drinking water and they are improving peoples lives in some areas of the world where water is scarce.
  • What the number inside the recycle symbol on most plastics means. It’s usually on or near the bottom of every plastic container. If your drinking out of one right now it most likely has a 1 or 2 on it. Recycled #2 plastics are heavier plastics than #1 plastics. The #2 plastic would be a typical milk jug, some juice bottles and even detergent jugs. The # 1 is what an average water bottle sold in the local grocery by the pack would most likely have on it. You may notice the #1 plastic is probably very clear and thinner than the #2 container. Different grades of plastics are recycled into different products.
  • #1 plastics or (PET plastics) are often times recycled into products using fleece, jackets, carpet, backpacks, sleeping bags etc.
  • #2 plastics can be recycled into heavier more durable products than #1 plastics like plastic crates, outdoor plastic furniture, play sets for children, toys, buckets, and even back into drinking and food grade containers and more.
  • Plastics #2, #4 and #5 are the plastics that can be made safest for foods and drinking.
  • Notice we didn’t mention #1 plastic in the safest for foods and drinking? While #1 is considered safe enough by the FDA to drink the contents once, most health advocates agree that manufactures should not recycle the #1 plastic back into a drinking bottle again because of bacteria and chemical breakdown concerns.
  • #1 grade plastic water bottlesDo not reuse #1 grade plastic bottles, think of the 1 as (one time use) because they are not manufactured or safe for repeated use. Repeated use of a #1 plastic container for drinking or eating can release unwanted and unhealthy chemicals in your food and drink, washing it does not help, washing it does not make it safer and can actually release more  chemicals into your food or drink. I’m guilty, I’ve done it but not any more.
  • The battery pack on some hybrid drive vehicles manufactured today like the Toyota Prius can contain a whopping 20+ pounds of a rare earth metal called lanthanum. 90-95% of the earths lanthanum has been coming from China for years. China has recently made claims that they will scale back mining and exporting it, those are the facts so In theory by the time the battery on your new Toyota Prius goes bad (probably 10+ years) it could be a valuable recyclable.
  • Did you know food scraps can be recycled into an excellent compost for gardening? Breads, vegetables, fruit peels, coffee grounds and even eggshells are just a few of the ingredients that can be used to strengthen your soil’s fertility.
  • We all use bottles and jars either directly or indirectly, Americans discard about 28 billion of them each year.
  • Buenos Aires is home to about 3 million people which accumulate about 6 thousand tons of trash per day. It’s estimated that around 90% of their trash isn’t being recycled which is overloading their landfills and making garbage disposal a growing concern.
  • The most used metal in the world today is iron.
  • The second most used metal in the world today is aluminum followed by copper.
  • The typical can made in America has about 25% recycled steel in it.
  • Upcycling is when a material is recycled or transitioned into a more purposeful and valuable item than it was originally. For example, recycled bottles are used to make fleece which is used to make clothes.
  • Some strange things I’ve seen upcycled into other things are: A teapot and pan upcycled into a cool lamp, wood coat hangers combined with a bicycle rim upcycled into a unique chandelier and thousands of prescription lenses used to make a dazzling and glimmering chandelier ball.
  • What is Repurposing? Repurposing is when a tool or item is simply used for something other than what the manufacturer created it for. For example, people often use car tires to protect boats when docking.
  • Statistics say that about 80% of everything which is thrown by Americans can be recycled. The reality is that less than 30% is being recycled. There is a lot of room for improvement.
  • All the jars and glass bottles thrown away during one month by Americans could fill a huge skyscraper, the size of the Empire State Building. All these glass containers could be recycled instead.
  • It’s estimated that millions of creatures from the sea have been killed by plastic garbage and bags which are thrown in the oceans.
  • There is a huge patch of garbage on the ocean and that’s a fact. It’s called the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and is an enormous cesspool of various chemicals with a high reading of plastic pollutants. what we’re unclear on is it’s actual size which is now estimated to be larger than all of the United States.
  • If a ton of paper is recycled, around 17 trees are saved, as well as two oil barrels, 4100 energy kilowatts, 60 pounds worth of pollution and over 3 cubic yards in the landfills. If you’ve read all of the interesting facts about recyclingto this point, you’re incredible!

Interesting Facts About Solar Energy

Solar energy has been gathered by people and used for all kinds of purposes for over 2000 years. Interesting facts about solar energy is dedicated to teaching you about the past, present and future of this great source of renewable energy which only a small percentage of us are using to it’s current potential.
Solar energy is the main source of clean energy for all of earths life forms.
Although a small amount of pollution can be created when solar panels are manufactured, transported and installed, it’s nothing compared to the larger amounts of pollution created in processing and using fossil fuels and nuclear energy.
Do Solar Panels Need Maintenance?
Once solar panels are installed maintenance is generally very low and usually only consists of inspecting and cleaning off any debris or objects that block the panel from collecting solar energy from the sun.
What’s the Life expectancy of Solar Panels?
Most outdoor solar panels used today are going to be weatherproof, are expected to endure a wide variety of weather conditions and will have a life expectancy of between 20-40 years. As a rule of thumb the manufacturer may warranty the solar panel from 3 to 25 years. As with other products, the warranties, power output and life expectancy can vary greatly so do your homework.
Do Solar Panels Create Pollution
Once the solar panel is setup and working, the panel it’s self no longer creates any type of pollution which helps us to see how any pollution made in the manufacturing and transportation process is dismal compared to other sources of energy which continue to create pollution throughout the energy creating process.
If your using solar energy panels to create electric then you’re taking an important step in helping the environment.
Below are some interesting facts about solar energy:
  • Solar energy can be used in many ways, from cooking food to heating or cooling houses, powering automobiles, aircraft and providing energy to buildings.
  • One megawatt of energy can power 1000 average U.S homes for about one hour.
  • In July 2012 the first ever intercontinental round trip of a solar powered plane completed it’s 4,000 mile project to raise public awareness that solar energy can be a reliable source of energy.
  • In July 2012 the United States Bureau of Land Management announced that 285,000 acres across 6 of the nations states were prime areas for solar energy development and plans to move forward.
  • The largest solar plant in the world can be found in the Mojave desert and can create approximately 354 megawatts and it covers a total of about 1,000 acres, with 9 solar thermal plants.
  • Solar energy can only be produced during daylight to make electricity. That energy has to be used during the night but the production stops when the sun goes down.
  • Solar panels which are also known as photovoltaic panels are made mostly from silicon.
  • Researchers are working on a solar window film that could eventually be used on the windows of homes to reduce energy costs. Researchers say it could possibly even be sprayed on one day.
  • Even though you have to invest more initially to buy the solar panels, with  solar panel costs dropping, you should now be able to save money.
  • Robots that install solar panels around the clock and in all types of weather are current being developed and tested.
  • Solar power history dates back to at least 700 BC, when the sun rays were used to create fire, with the help of magnifying glasses.
  • Passive solar designs were used for the first time by Romans and Greeks. Their buildings were facing south, so the sun could light and heat the indoor areas.
  • The year when the first solar panels were released was 1956. Two years later space programs began using them and they remained an important source of energy ever since. One example is the International Space Station, which uses solar energy.
